Three Beautiful Ways to Document Your Baby’s First Days

When you’re preparing to welcome a new baby, choosing how to capture those early moments is a big (and exciting) decision. From sweetly posed studio portraits to real-life in-home lifestyle images, and even the raw emotion of a Fresh 48 hospital session, each option tells your baby’s story in a unique way.

The good news? There’s no wrong choice...just the one that feels right for your family.

Studio Newborn Photography

As a studio newborn photographer on Long Island, I specialize in classic, posed portraits that highlight all the tiny details of your baby’s early days—soft cheeks, curled fingers, sleepy smiles. These sessions take place in my warm, cozy studio, where every element is styled and prepared for you.

Studio newborn sessions are perfect for families who want:

  • A clean, polished, artistic look
  • A variety of props, wraps, and accessories
  • Neutral, consistent backgrounds and gentle lighting
  • A stress-free experience outside of the home

This type of session may not be right for you if:

  • You're stressed about leaving the house shortly after birth
  • Your baby has medical needs that make travel difficult
  • You prefer unposed, candid photography
  • You want your pets included in the session

These sessions are typically done within the first 7–14 days while your baby is still sleepy and posable.

Lifestyle Newborn Photography (In-Home)

In-home newborn photography on Long Island offers a more relaxed, natural approach. These sessions take place in your home, focusing on connection, candid moments, and the unique details of your daily life with a new baby.

Lifestyle newborn sessions are ideal for families who want:

  • A documentary-style feel with minimal posing
  • Photos that include your nursery, pets, or siblings
  • A more flexible timeline (great for older newborns, too!)
  • Comfort and convenience without leaving the house

This might not be the right session for you if:

  • Your home has very limited natural light
  • You feel overwhelmed by clutter or mess and don’t want it in photos
  • Your home is under construction or in transition
  • You prefer a highly styled or posed look

There’s beauty in the everyday—soft morning light through your window, a yawn on your shoulder, tiny fingers wrapped around yours.  Because lifestyle sessions are meant to feel authentic and true to life, they receive a different editing approach than studio sessions—more natural, less polished. I don’t heavily Photoshop backgrounds, so your home should be reasonably tidy and visually cohesive for the best results.

Fresh 48 Newborn Photography

Fresh 48 photography on Long Island is a powerful way to preserve your baby’s first 24–48 hours, while you’re still in the hospital or birth center. These sessions document the raw, emotional beginning: wrinkly skin, hospital bracelets, sleepy snuggles, and first sibling meetings.

Fresh 48 sessions are ideal for families who want to remember:

  • The earliest hours of your baby’s life
  • First cuddles, feedings, and family introductions
  • Your baby's features before they begin to change
  • A story focused, real life approach with minimal interference

This type of session may not be the best fit if:

  • You’re not comfortable being photographed so soon after birth
  • Your birth plan is uncertain, and you prefer flexibility in scheduling
  • Hospital restrictions prevent access to photographers or visitors
  • You’re planning to go home quickly after delivery

Still Torn? You Can Combine Sessions

Some families choose a Fresh 48 session to capture those immediate post-birth moments, followed by either a studio or lifestyle newborn session once they’ve had time to rest and adjust. This allows you to preserve multiple chapters of your baby’s story.
