Essential Tips for New Parents on Long Island, NY: Preparing for your Baby's Arrival
As you may or may not know, I don't have children. But being an experienced newborn photographer for almost 10 years, I've talked to tons of brand new parents and heard the good, the bad, the ugly. Bringing home a newborn is a life-changing experience. While it’s an exciting time filled with joy and love, it can also be overwhelming for new parents. If you’re preparing to welcome your little one, here are ten things I think you should know before bringing baby home. From setting up your home to capturing those first precious moments, these tips will help make the transition a bit smoother and a lot more memorable.
1. Create a Cozy and Functional Space
I hear over and over that parents don't have a nursery set up. That's ok! For the first few weeks, you may prefer to have baby in the room with you. Just make sure you've created a functional and cozy space for baby, regardless of where that is in your home. Think about what you’ll need for those late night feedings and diaper changes, but also make sure it’s a space that makes you feel calm and connected to your baby. You don’t have to go crazy with expensive décor or items. just simple touches like soft lighting, comfy chairs, and a cozy blanket can do wonders. Having everything nearby and handy will be super helpful for those middle of the night feedings and changes. Take your time setting up the nursery if you haven't done so already. You've got a lot on your plate, no need to add more.
2. Stock Up on Baby Essentials
This is important, because you want to do whatever possible to minimize stress. Before baby arrives, make sure you have the basics like diapers, wipes, baby clothes, and a few bottles if you plan to use them. There are so many gadgets and frankly unnecessary things on the market that you'll find you probably never use. but having the essentials on hand will make life much easier in those early days. Just remember, our parents didn't have half of what's available these days, and they did just fine.
3. Don’t Forget About You!
As a new parent, it’s easy to forget about your own needs. They say to sleep when baby sleeps, and while that sounds like a great idea, it's not always realistic. There are bottles to wash, laundry to fold, etc. But take the help wherever you can get it. A friend, family member, partner, or just grab the next door neighbor! Self care is super important in the first few weeks, so that you can be your best version of yourself for baby. Remember to keep stocked up on snacks, water, and whatever else you need that makes you happy. Newborns sense everything, so the calmer you are, the calmer baby will be!
4. Go With Your Gut
You're already overwhelmed, so don't fuel the fire by overwhelming yourself with extra information you may not need. You'll hear a million different opinions on every topic, so my best advice - do what works for you! If breastfeeding isn't working for you, then try something else. At the end of the day, it's better to have a happy, fed baby, than a starving baby and a stressed Mommy. No two babies are the same, so your experience will always be unique to you.
5. Take It Slow and Enjoy the Moment
The first few weeks are a blur, but they’re also precious. As tempting as it is to rush through everything, remember to take it slow and enjoy these fleeting moments. Spend time snuggling your newborn, even if it’s just for a few minutes at a time.
6. Document the Early Days
The first few days and weeks of your baby’s life are some of the most special and magical moments. One way to preserve these memories is through photos. Whether you choose a studio newborn session or a lifestyle session in the comfort of your home, capturing these moments will help you relive them for years to come. A Fresh 48 session, taken in the hospital or birthing center, is also a great way to preserve those first moments with your newborn.
7. Have Realistic Routine Expectations
Whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, establishing a routine early on can help set the tone for those first few weeks. But you'll find that the routine will need to change constantly. Newborns do so much growing in the first few months, and between cluster feeding, growth spurts, sleep habit changes, you have to roll with the punches. Don’t stress too much about getting everything perfect because babies march to the beat of their own drums, and you’ll both figure it out together.
8. Invest in a Good Baby Carrier
Having a baby carrier on hand will make it easier to keep your hands free while still being close to your baby. Whether you’re cooking, cleaning, or just need a break from holding your baby all day, a baby carrier can be a game-changer.
9. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions
Parenting is a learning curve, and no one expects you to know everything. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice, whether from your pediatrician or trusted friends and family. And remember, go with your gut! If it feels right, it probably is :)
10. Capture the Little Things
The tiny fingers, the sweet yawns, and the sleepy snuggles....cherish them. Before you know it, the newborn phase will pass, and you will miss it, regardless of how difficult it may have been. With all the craziness of adjusting to life with a newborn, it's easy to forget just how precious these tiny details are. This is another reason I feel that professional newborn photos might be the most important ones you'll ever take.
Bringing your baby home is the beginning of an incredible adventure. While it can feel overwhelming at times, remember to take it one step at a time, and don’t forget to take in those beautiful, fleeting moments.
