Because a little preparation goes a long way toward joyful, stress free family photos

If you've ever tried to take a photo of a toddler, you already know: they have their own ideas. One minute they’re all giggles, the next they’re running the opposite direction, or laying face down on the floor. As a family photographer on Long Island, I’ve seen it all, and I promise: toddlers don’t need to be perfectly behaved to get beautiful, meaningful photos. But a little prep beforehand can make a huge difference in how smooth your session feels, for you and for them.

Here’s how to set your toddler up for success so your session feels more fun than frantic.

1. Talk About the Session Ahead of Time

Start prepping your toddler a few days before your shoot. Tell them you're going on an adventure to take pictures together, and talk about it like it’s something fun to look forward to. Avoid saying things like “you have to smile” or “be good”.  Instead, say you’ll be playing, cuddling, and spending time as a family.

Bonus tip: Show them pictures from past sessions (either yours or examples from my website) to help them visualize what to expect.

2. Choose an Outfit That’s Comfortable (and Kid-Friendly)

While I love helping families choose outfits that photograph beautifully, comfort is just as important, especially for little ones. Avoid anything itchy, stiff, or overly complicated. If they’re tugging at their clothes or feeling restricted, it may reflect in their mood.

Soft knits, stretchy fabrics, and layers that move with them are best. And always bring a backup outfit… just in case.

3. Bring Snacks (and Maybe a Bribe)

A well timed snack can work magic during a family photo session. Stick to easy, non messy snacks like mini crackers, dried fruit, or fruit snacks. If you’re okay with offering a reward, whether it’s a small treat, a sticker, or a trip to the playground afterward, it can go a long way.  I'm a firm believer in bribing toddlers!

Avoid chocolate or anything that could stain clothing or mouths!

4. Let Them Be Themselves

The best family photos aren’t about perfect smiles or everyone looking at the camera. They’re about real connection, giggles, cuddles, curiosity, and the joy of just being together. Some of my favorite photos come from the moments when toddlers are being their most authentic selves.  Some of my favorite images have been of a straight faced child looking off into the distance.  Adjust your expectations so that everyone is happy and relaxed.

So don’t stress if they don’t sit still or follow instructions. We’ll follow their lead and create magic in the chaos.

5. Bring a Favorite Toy or Comfort Item

Sometimes having a favorite stuffed animal or small toy on hand can help your toddler feel more secure. It can also be a sweet part of the memory and we can even include it in a few photos!  Telling them "let's do one with, and one without" always works wonders!

6. Go With the Flow

Family photo sessions, especially with toddlers, are full of movement, play, and unpredictability. And that’s exactly what makes them special. If you come in with a relaxed mindset and realistic expectations, you’re much more likely to enjoy the experience, and walk away with images you’ll treasure for decades.

Family Portraits That Capture What Matters Most

Toddlers grow up in the blink of an eye. What feels chaotic now will someday feel like a beautiful, messy blur you wish you could step back into, just for a moment. That’s why family portraits on Long Island are such a gift. They freeze time in a way your memory can’t.
