Choosing the perfect photographer for your family, maternity, newborn, cake smash, or any other type of photography service on Long Island is about more than just availability and price. One of the most important factors you might overlook? The photographer’s editing style, and whether it aligns with your personal taste and expectations.

In this blog, I’ll walk you through why editing consistency is crucial, what questions to ask when you check a photographer’s portfolio, and other important qualities to consider when booking a photographer.

Understanding Editing Styles: Why Consistency Is Key

Every photographer has a unique editing style, and it’s important to find one that fits your vision and will stand the test of time. Some popular styles include:

  • Light and airy: Bright, soft, and natural
  • Dark and moody: Deep shadows and rich tones
  • True to color: Authentic skin tones and natural colors (my specialty!)

While trendy editing styles can look amazing right now, it’s worth thinking about how those images might age. Will you still love the dark and moody look 10 or 20 years from now? Or will you prefer classic, timeless photos?  This is why I take a "true to color" approach to my editing.  I want your images to hold up over time and bring you right back to that moment in time.

Don’t Judge a Photographer By Their Instagram Alone

It’s easy to be dazzled by a photographer’s Instagram feed or website, but remember, they usually showcase only their very best images. Sometimes, the feed doesn’t reflect the full range of their work or consistency across an entire session.

It’s always okay to ask for a full sample gallery from a recent client. This will give you a realistic sense of the editing style, how they handle lighting, skin tones, and how consistent their work really is.  You can also check their website for "Featured Galleries" which should show an entire gallery from one session.  Also be aware of stylized sessions, which often use professional models, and perfectly curated circumstances (scenery, props, clothing, etc.) and don't truly reflect what a natural client session will look like.

Photographers Don’t Change Their Editing Style for Clients — So Choose Wisely

A professional photographer will stick to their signature editing style because it’s part of their brand and expertise. If you find someone willing to drastically change their editing style just for your session, be cautious, this often leads to inconsistent results or images that don’t feel authentic.

What to Look for Beyond Editing Style: Personality & Experience

A great photographer is more than their editing. Here are some must haves:

  • Comfortable with kids: For family and milestone sessions, you want someone who knows how to work with children and keep the mood fun and relaxed.
  • Makes you feel at ease: Feeling comfortable and confident in front of the camera is key to getting genuine expressions and beautiful images.
  • Has a sense of humor: If they make you laugh, you’ll get natural smiles and real moments.
  • Offers personalized attention: Do they respond quickly? Do they answer your questions thoroughly? Do they hand edit every image themselves?

Depth of Editing: What’s Included and What’s Not

Be wary of photographers who promise dozens of images (50+ or more) with minimal editing. Quality hand editing takes time.

I personally:

  • Smooth skin and remove minor imperfections
  • Whiten teeth and enhance eyes subtly
  • Remove flyaway hairs and “double chin” shadows
  • Shape and gently “slim” the body where flattering and to my client's personal taste, while keeping your natural look intact

Every image you receive is carefully edited, ensuring you look and feel your best, not overly retouched or artificial.
